Netflix has a love-hate relationship with live-action adaptations. From disasters like Death Note to the pleasant surprise that was One Piece, the platform has a long history of attempts with varying degrees of success. But there is one series they don’t want to fail with: Avatar: The Last Airbender.
The adaptation of the original series by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko will arrive on Netflix on February 22nd, and the final trailer promises that it will be a live-action remake, at least, with the same quality as One Piece. We’ll see if the result is the same, although for now everything seems to indicate that we are on the right track.
What is Avatar: The Last Airbender about?
In Avatar, the world is divided into four nations, corresponding to the four elements: The Water Tribe, The Earth Kingdom, the Fire Nation, and the Air Nomads. In each nation, there is a notable order called the “Masters” who learn to enhance their innate talent and manipulate their native element, combining martial arts and elemental magic.
In each generation, only one Master is capable of controlling the four elements, and is called the Avatar, the spirit of the world manifested in human form, capable of maintaining the harmony of the four nations. When the Fire Nation subjected the rest of the nations to its dominion, it seemed that war would prevail. However, the reincarnation of the Avatar awaited, frozen in an ice bubble, for someone to find him.
