If you are of a certain age, you will remember those games that could fit on a floppy disk, and there was still space for a couple more photos. In fact, those statements by Bill Gates claiming that 640 Kb should be more than enough for everyone are long gone. Now, games like ‘Baldur’s Gate 3’ take up 150 Gb and ‘Ark: Survival evolved’ was spending over 250 Gb without breaking a sweat back in 2017. Luckily, there are always those who swim against the current.

Does not take up space

It is the case of ‘Animal well’, which is not only the second highest rated game of 2024 so far, but also comes much closer to Gates than to ‘Ark’, showing that to engage the audience it is not necessary to fill the hard drives: with only 33.3 Mb this game manages to create a Metroidvania in which the creator has used files with the worst possible quality, full of pixels and low resolution.

But it’s possible that if you buy it on PS5 you may find a surprise: the game weighs 101 Mb. No, we didn’t lie, it’s just that the image that appears when you select the icon, being in 4K, is bigger than the game itself. And seeing everything the game offers, it makes you think about so many developers occupying unnecessary space.

‘Animal well’ is being a huge success among fans of the genre, who have discovered, to their surprise, that 33 Mb is enough to contain such a quantity of secrets and mysteries that a community has been created in record time trying to unlock them. Surely, in the big studios, they are pulling their hair out while wondering if making smaller games is going to become a new trend. Honestly? I hope so.
