We’ve been talking about Rebel Moon for a few days, and it’s no wonder. The movie that was originally meant to be a Star Wars spin-off has turned into an independent science fiction film coming to Netflix, directed by Zack Snyder.

And Zack Snyder has explained that his upcoming science fiction epic, which will initially be released in two parts, will be around four hours in total duration. Rebel Moon Part 1: A Child of Fire, set to arrive in December, will last for two hours.

Its sequel, Rebel Moon Part 2: The Scargiver, set for April 2024, is still being edited, but Snyder suggests that “right now it’s under two hours,” although he doesn’t know “the exact runtime.”

The total duration of the initial cut of Rebel Moon is comparable to that of Snyder’s longest film in the catalog: Zack Snyder’s Justice League, the director’s cut of the DC cinematic universe movie.

Now, in a conversation with Netflix Tudum, Snyder has confirmed that the extended version will have “around an hour of extra content.” So, if the director’s cut of Rebel Moon contains all the scenes of his two-part extravaganza, plus an additional 60 minutes of footage, its duration will be about five hours.

Rebel Moon could potentially become the longest English-language film of all time

Currently, “Cleopatra” from 1963 holds that record, with a duration of four hours and eight minutes. If the two parts of Rebel Moon end up having a combined runtime of four hours, it will become the second-longest Hollywood film in history, displacing “Gone with the Wind” from 1939 to the third spot on the list.

Not only that, it will also become the longest film released on one of the world’s top streaming services. As of now, Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” for Netflix holds that record with its three hours and 29 minutes of runtime.

And that’s not even considering the director’s cut. If the extended version of Rebel Moon surpasses five hours, it will become the 38th film in history to reach that duration. Its closest rival is the 1994 documentary “Tsahal,” which runs for five hours and four minutes.

However, even if the potential runtime of the director’s cut of Rebel Moon is substantial, it still has a long way to go to enter the list of the top 10 longest films of all time.

The Filipino crime drama “Heremias” from 2006 currently holds the tenth position, with an astonishing duration of eight hours and 39 minutes. Meanwhile, the first place is reserved for the 2019 Bangladeshi film “Amra Ekta Cinema Banabo,” which runs for 21 hours and five minutes.
