Zack Snyder has been completely sidelined from the DC Comics Universe he was shaping on the big screen with Warner Bros. However, the director hasn’t stopped since then, and he has found a loyal ally in Netflix to carry out his upcoming projects. Thanks to the platform, he already released “Army of the Dead,” and now he’s working on what he considers a dream project he’s had for years: “Rebel Moon.”

Rebel Moon is an upcoming Netflix project that will consist of two consecutive films. It’s a space science fiction universe very similar to Star Wars, and from what we’ve learned, it all stems from ideas that Snyder had for George Lucas’ franchise as he considers himself a big fan of it. However, we can already see that Rebel Moon will be much different, serious, and infused with Snyder’s characteristic touch. A treat for his fans, indeed.

Rebel Moon Trailer

During Gamescom 2023 held in Cologne, Germany, Snyder took the opportunity to unveil the trailer for Rebel Moon. In it, we can see all the necessary ingredients for a Snyder production: darkness, abundant action, grim faces, and an epic adventure on a grand scale.

But that’s not all. In Rebel Moon, we also see many ideas that could fit perfectly into Star Wars, from spaceships to yes, lightsabers. Oh, and there are even Harry Potter hippogriffs and a story worthy of Dune. There’s no doubt that the director wanted to scratch his itch for not entering the Disney franchise… and he did it in a big way. Watch the trailer for yourself.

Synopsis for Rebel Moon

But what will Rebel Moon really be about? The pair of films promises an exciting adventure that rivals even Denis Villeneuve’s Dune, and if we delve deeper into the story, it becomes even more intriguing. Let’s take a look at what the official synopsis of the first film, Rebel Moon Chapter 1: A Child of Fire, says.

When a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy is threatened by a tyrannical power, their best hope for survival is the enigmatic Kora (Sofia Boutella). She assembles a group willing to fight, made up of outsiders, insurgents, farmers, and war orphans from various planets united by a common cause: redemption and revenge. As the shadow of an entire kingdom looms over the unlikeliest of moons, a battle for the fate of a galaxy unfolds, and a new army of heroes is forged.

We still have no information about the second part of the film, titled Rebel Moon Chapter 2: The Warrior Who Leaves Marks. However, it’s likely that it will continue the story where the first part leaves off, and that it will end with a major cliffhanger.

Cast of Rebel Moon

The cast of Rebel Moon also promises an exciting and star-studded film series. Zack Snyder has blended actors he has collaborated with on multiple occasions with others who are completely new to the project. The main cast members are as follows, although there are many more due to the expansive universe:

  • Sofia Boutella as Kora
  • Ray Fisher as Darrian Bloodaxe
  • Anthony Hopkins as Jimmy
  • Charlie Hunnam as Kai
  • Jena Malone as Armada
  • Djimon Hounsou as General Titus
  • Bae Doona as Nemesis
  • Staz Nair as Tarak
  • Michiel Huisman as Gunnar
  • Sky Yang as Aris

Rebel Moon release date

As mentioned several times throughout the article, Rebel Moon will be divided into two separate films: “Child of Fire” and “The Scargiver.” The release dates for the two films are as follows:

  • Rebel Moon – Chapter 1: Child of Fire will be released on December 22, 2023, on Netflix.
  • Rebel Moon – Chapter 2: The Scargiver will be released on April 19, 2024, on Netflix.

It’s important to note that both parts will be exclusively released on Netflix. There’s no anticipation of any theatrical releases for either part at this time, although with Zack Snyder, anything is possible.
