While Naughty Dog, the developers of the popular action-adventure game, The Last of Us, haven’t made any official statement regarding the release of a remake. Whispers from multiple sources have leaked that we might already see the remake in 2022.
According to Gamesbeat reporter Jeff Grubb, Naughty Dog is already pushing completion on the remake of The Last of Us, and according to his sources, it is likely to launch during the holiday season of 2022. Jeff Grubb is a well-known spoiler that has shared many leaks. He shared the rumor about this remake on his latest episode on his channel, Kinda Funny Gamescast.
However, Jeff Grub isn’t the only one who received insider information regarding a remake. Fellow leak machine Tom Henderson also speculated a holiday launch on PS5. When you hear multiple stories lining up and corroborating one another like this, it really does make you wonder if we’ll be seeing this remake of one of the top games from 2013 in 2022 already?
The first rumors of The Last of Us remake started in April 2021, when Naughty Dog consolidated studios with Sony’s gaming division. It is speculated that Sony pulled the San Diego Visual Art Service Group’ off the Last Of Us remake project to assist on other ongoing projects.
At the same time, Sony Bend was working on a Days Gone sequel, and they were also pulled off the project to assist the Naughty Dog team with another major IP, Uncharted Legacy of Thieves Collection. This led to quite a bit of turmoil within Sony’s gaming division as teams felt they were being pushed from their own projects and ideas to assist with the proverbial cash cows.
We also know that Naughty Dog is currently working on a multiplayer component of The Last of Us: Part Two. They’re also working alongside HBO on the TV adaptation. However, we can’t help but wonder why they’d be aiming for a remake of the original so soon? Could it be to compensate for the less than ideal reception of the sequel? Either way, we’re very excited to see a remastered version of this great game.
