In anime, things tend to happen slowly. That’s why it’s not surprising if a sequel to a series takes more than three or four years to arrive. The nature of committees and series funding is complex and volatile. This doesn’t make it any less tragic when it’s confirmed that something that fans have been waiting for years will never come.
Yuri!!! on Ice, a 12-episode anime that premiered in 2016 and followed the rise to success of an ice skater named Yuri Katsuki, who is trained and falls in love with a successful professional named Victor Nikiforov, has suffered the cancellation of its movie. A tragedy, as Yuri!!! on Ice was considered one of the best animes of its year. It had a following that went beyond the classic anime audience.
The movie, titled Yuri!!! On Ice the movie: Ice Adolescence, was rumored shortly after the end of the series. Its existence was confirmed in 2018, when a trailer was released and it was confirmed that it would be about Victor’s adolescence. In 2020, it was confirmed that the work was still in progress, despite the lack of news. Since then, there have been no new updates, until the announcement of its cancellation on April 19.
Something disappointing and a real blow for fans. Not only because it means having missed the opportunity to see this movie, but also because there is a possibility that a second season of Yuri!!! On Ice may never materialize.
