The new PlayStation 5 update adds a perfect accessibility feature for competitive gaming

On April 24, Sony released a system update for the PlayStation 5 that features a new accessibility function known as Audio Focus. This system allows players to amplify and hear certain sounds within video games more clearly, which is especially useful in competitive modes like Call of Duty: Warzone and Search and Destroy.

An option that PC players have been using for years

The implementation of Audio Focus on the PS5 aims to provide players with a competitive advantage by facilitating the detection of enemies at greater distances. This feature is similar to the Loudness Equalization setting that many PC gamers have used for years, which levels the game audio, minimizing excessive sounds and amplifying more subtle sounds, such as enemy footsteps.

Although it should be used with caution, Audio Focus offers several presets, including one specifically for amplifying footsteps called Boost High Pitch. This preset enhances high-frequency sounds, but players should keep in mind that excessive use could harm their hearing. It is recommended that users without hearing loss use this feature at low or medium settings to avoid long-term hearing damage.

PS5 players who have tried Audio Focus report that, although the option does not offer the same level of control as the PC setup, it does enhance audio perception in competitive games, allowing for more effective detection of opponents. However, it is important to moderate the use of this feature, as the amplification of metallic or background sounds can be uncomfortable.

Audio Focus is also expected to be compatible with other competitive titles on the PS5, which opens the door to a more inclusive gaming experience. This update on hearing in games is in line with the industry’s commitment to facilitating accessibility for all players.
