Microsoft and Meta have announced a collaboration to launch a limited edition of the Meta Quest virtual reality headset “inspired by Xbox”. Although specific details of the device have not yet been fully revealed, it appears to be a customized version of the Meta Quest 3 or a future iteration that will include an Xbox controller.

This partnership is part of Meta’s opening to other hardware manufacturers for their Quest devices. While Asus and Lenovo are developing their own VR headsets with Horizon OS, the collaboration with Microsoft focuses on a special edition of the headset, following the model of limited editions of Xbox consoles.

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, said in an Instagram post that this special edition VR headset “comes with Xbox controllers and Game Pass, so you can start playing immediately on a big screen wherever you go.”

This partnership between Microsoft and Meta represents a significant change after Microsoft’s failed attempts in the field of Windows mixed reality. The collaboration allows Quest owners to enjoy apps like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint in VR, as well as access Xbox Cloud Gaming.

Although Microsoft previously explored compatibility with VR with Project Scorpio, it never fully integrated it into its Xbox consoles. Now, its partnership with Meta would give it a new opportunity thanks to the integration of VR into its gaming ecosystem.
