Netflix never stops surprising its users with dozens of series that, even though they might seem to come out of nowhere, make a big impact on the general public. It’s happened with great thrillers like “The Lady of the Dead” or “Reptiles,” but there’s another series that straddles the line between thriller and political drama that has unexpectedly made its way into the international top of the platform.

“Secret City” is a 2016 Australian miniseries. Originally from the Foxtel network, it spans two seasons with a total of 12 episodes. Despite being quick to watch, it holds great depth in its characters and story, which has caused many people to become hooked on it, thus placing it among the best on the platform. Here’s the trailer for you to check out.

A surprising political drama available on Netflix

Directed by Emma Freeman, the series tells the story of journalist Harriet Dunkley. Amidst escalating international tension between the United States and China, the Australian journalist uncovers an ancient conspiracy that conceals murders, suicides, and attacks that occurred in Canberra, Australia.

This dark and somewhat fantastical story hides one of the best narratives currently on Netflix. It’s a very interesting series with great characters and plot twists akin to M. Night Shyamalan’s style. Undoubtedly, it has become a pleasant surprise amidst a repetitive catalog of series and movies that seem the same, as the originality of “The Secret City” makes it unique in its kind.

The show features a purely Australian cast. The protagonist is Anna Torv, accompanied by actors such as Dan Wyllie, Jacki Weaver, Damon Herriman, Alan Dale, and Alex Dimitrades. Undoubtedly, a cast that lives up to the recommendation of the series itself.
