Juan Antonio Bayona is currently the most important Spanish director, and his upcoming movie makes it very clear why. “Society of the Snow,” a remake of “Alive!” that recounts one of the most shocking real-life stories of the 20th century, will arrive on Netflix on January 4th. And it comes with many nominations for the Goya Awards… and perhaps even some for the Oscars?

However, it’s clear that Bayona is the Spanish gem of our country, and that’s what he aims to prove in his new movie. But how does the film look? Beyond the thunderous applause it has received at every festival where it premiered, we can now see its trailer, and it certainly looks spectacular. Here it goes:

The most anticipated Netflix movie is arriving

Based on true events and set in 1972, “Society of the Snow” tells the incredible story of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, chartered to carry a rugby team to Chile, which crashed in the heart of the Andes. Only 29 of its 45 passengers survived the accident. Trapped in one of the most hostile and inaccessible environments on the planet, they had to resort to extreme measures to stay alive.

Bayona directs his most extreme film since “The Impossible,” assembling a stellar team. Belén Atienza and Sandra Hermida produce, as is customary in his films, and the screenplay is by Bayona himself alongside Bernat Vilaplana (who worked on “The Impossible“), Jaime Marqués, and Nicolás Casariego, all based on the novel of the same name by writer Pablo Vierci.
