In 2021, the source code of The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 was leaked on the Internet. However, it has remained inaccessible because it was protected by a password, until now.

The leak of both games raised alarms in the offices of CD Projekt Red, but the inability to access them made many breathe a sigh of relief. However, this has changed: a user on Reddit, u/Custer_Vincen, discovered on 4Chan that the passwords that unlocked the source code had been discovered by a ransomware group called HelloKitty.

By having the source code exposed, other developers and studios will be able to access it and discover all the tricks that have been used to bring these productions to life.

But how would it affect us as users? The Witcher fans won’t see many changes. CD Projekt Red has already confirmed that this year they will release a tool to create mods for The Witcher 3. On the other hand, Cyberpunk 2077 would be more advantageous in this aspect. In fact, it is likely that in the future we will see much more complex and detailed mods thanks to users being able to “tinker” with the source code.

Unfortunately, this is not the first attack of this kind that puts a developer in checkmate. One of the most recent ones was carried out by Insomniac Games, which, after being a victim of a ransomware attack, saw how its confidential information became public on the Internet. In this case, the development and release plans that the company planned to execute over the next 10 years were revealed.

At the moment, it is not clear whether the Polish company will take any legal action in response to what happened.
