The subtitles level up in iOS 18
Automatic activation in multiple scenarios and improved availability

Subtitles seem to want to take on another relevance in iOS 18. They reach various parts of the system, integrate in a simply brilliant way and make our day-to-day with Apple devices much easier. From their arrival in the form of real-time subtitles in FaceTime on Apple TV to their automatic activation, they should not go unnoticed.
Several implementations that cumulatively catch attention
The automatic activation of subtitles when muting that comes with tvOS 18 makes it so that, when pressing the mute button, the subtitles are automatically activated. When unmuting, the subtitles disappear, keeping the screen clean and free of distractions when they are not needed.
But there’s more. When we slightly go back while watching content, the system understands that it’s most likely that we didn’t understand what they said. So, for just 10 seconds, it activates the subtitles so we can read, in addition to listening, that specific fragment.
To finish, real-time subtitles that allow us to read a FaceTime conversation, something that was already present on the iPhone and iPad, now also arrives on the Apple TV 4K. A feature much more focused on accessibility than the previous two, which can also be useful in more than one circumstance.
However, the possibility of interacting with the audio of our devices through success is really interesting. One detail, three if we count them individually, that could have gone unnoticed, but deserves our attention. A small technical improvement that is actually an important step towards more intuitive and easy-to-use devices.
