Tesla vehicles have long been regarded as some of the hardest cars to steal, thanks to their advanced security features and real-time GPS tracking.

However, recent events in Miami have cast doubt on this reputation, as two thieves were caught on camera effortlessly unlocking and stealing multiple Teslas from a parking lot.

The stolen vehicles have since been recovered, but the criminals remain at large and are suspected of being linked to similar thefts in the area.

Miami Car Theft Raises Concerns Over Tesla Security Efficacy

The alarming incident took place at a rental car lot where several Tesla vehicles were held for lease. Security footage shows the thieves using a Model Y to breach the fence and access the vehicles.

Once inside, they quickly unlocked and drove away with three Teslas. The exact method they employed remains unclear, leading experts to speculate that they may have used relay attacks—a tactic that has gained notoriety in Europe for its effectiveness against Tesla security systems.

Despite the apparent ease with which these thieves operated, they were unable to disable the vehicles’ GPS tracking, a crucial feature that has been a significant deterrent against car thefts.

Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office authorities confirmed the recovery of the stolen vehicles and noted another incidence of theft that might involve the same suspects. This trend gives rise to concerns that the sophistication of Tesla thieves in North America may be increasing, similar to what has been observed in Europe.

In response to these rising threats, Tesla is implementing additional security measures, including an “improved cryptography” key fob and an optional “PIN to Drive” feature requiring drivers to enter a PIN before operating the vehicle.

These measures are designed to reduce the chances of theft, particularly in the event of relay attacks. With the automotive landscape becoming increasingly complex, it remains vital for Tesla to continue evolving its security protocols to stay ahead of potential criminals.
