How cool would it be if you didn’t need a keyboard and mouse to interact with your computer. Imagine it, all you need is your hands and the computer will pick up your gestures and do what you want it to do. Sounds cool doesn’t it.

Well, thanks to the Human-Computer Interaction Institute at Carnegie Mellon University you don’t have to imagine it. You can see it right now and, they’re hoping, soon you’ll be able to do it.

Desktopography is the name of the project, they’re working on at Carnegie Mellon, and it projects your apps and programs onto your desk where you can then interact with them as if they were on your phone or another touchscreen device. The amazing thing about Desktopography is that it can be screwed directly into a standard lightbulb socket.

At the moment it costs around $1,000 to produce a one off Desktopography unit but the team at the Human-Computer Interaction Institute believe that mass producing the units could see prices drop to as little as $50 each. That isn’t bad at all for something that turns your whole desk into a tablet.
