Robert Rodriguez is a very peculiar director. Despite having works like Sin City and being one of the promoters of pulp in cinema, he has never managed to have a very marked trajectory and has been jumping from project to project. However, there is a movie that he had in mind for years and until recently he was not able to carry it out.

Hypnotic is a science fiction thriller that Rodríguez wanted to make for over twenty years, and finally saw the light in May 2023. Starring Ben Affleck, the film aimed to be a small box office success, but unfortunately it didn’t work out and was quickly forgotten. However, since Amazon Prime Video included it in their catalog, the trend has changed and it is one of the most viewed on the platform.

Is it worth watching Hypnotic?

You never start a project thinking it will take so long“, Rodríguez explained during the premiere tour of the film, making it clear that he started writing it in 2002. “I never found the time to finish it until in 2015 I wrote more and was ready to carry it out. But then came Alita: Battle Angel, which took us three years, and then came Covid”.

Finally, Rodríguez managed to make it a reality, and now it is reaching a larger audience than ever on Amazon Prime Video. But what is Hypnotic really about? Its synopsis is as follows:

“This science fiction thriller tells the story of Daniel Rourke, a detective searching for his missing little daughter. While investigating a series of strange bank robberies, Rourke will question everything he sees or feels. He will be aided by Diana Cruz, a psychic who will tell him about a new concept: ‘hypnotic’, and how everything he hears or sees seems perfectly normal, without actually being so. It will be then when the detective, unable to distinguish what is real or not, pursues and is simultaneously pursued by a mysterious and elusive individual who seems to hold the key to finding the missing girl”.
