Netflix knows that Spanish talent is one of the most outstanding in the global film industry, and they are making the most of it by giving directors like Jota Bayona the opportunity to develop their films there. But The Society of Snow is not (at least for now) the most viewed Spanish film on the streaming service, but another one that has been released very recently.

While El Hoyo, a film that won the Sitges Festival at its premiere thanks to its radical proposal, was the most watched film on the platform, Nowhere has managed to surpass it after several weeks. Thus, the film starring Anna Castillo and directed by Albert Pintó has unexpectedly placed itself in Netflix’s national top.

A movie that surprises everyone who sees it

Nowhere has surpassed 83.7 million views in the last week, thus surpassing the 82.8 million achieved by El hoyo in 2020 during its first 91 days on Netflix. It is curious that both are science fiction/dystopian thrillers, a genre that generally does not stand out too much in our country.

Nowhere is set in a near dystopian future, and tells the story of Mía (Anna Castillo), a pregnant woman who flees from her totalitarian country hidden in a shipping container. To do so, she must separate from her husband (Tamar Novas), and survive a violent storm that throws her into the sea, leaving her completely alone. Thus, in the utmost solitude and adrift in the middle of the ocean, Mía will have to survive to save her future daughter and be reunited with her husband.

In the style of Buried, the film by Rodrigo Cortés that reached the top in 2010, Nowhere presents an incredibly suffocating and full of edges story. It is the consolidation of Albert Pintó as a great director, Anna Castillo as an incredible actress, and Netflix as the home of this genre for Spain.
