Turkish series continue to captivate global audiences, and Netflix is the best place to find them. The streaming platform has specialized in exporting them beyond their country of origin, and currently has nothing to envy to its international thriller and comedy offerings.
Now, there is a Turkish series that has stood out above the rest: Istanbul Club. Unlike many acclaimed Turkish productions that we can see on Netflix, this new installment stands out for its setting in the 50s, offering a unique experience in a country that we are discovering more and more about.
We travel to 1950s Turkey
The original title of the series is Kulüp, and it focuses on the intriguing story of Matilda (Gökçe Bahadir), a woman who has just been released after spending 17 years behind bars. Her main mission is to rebuild her relationship with her daughter Rasel (Asude Kalebek), who has grown up in an orphanage while her mother was serving her sentence. However, the plot becomes complicated when Matilda, in search of quick money, ventures into the world of nightclubs, exposing herself to dangerous situations and people of questionable reputation.
The most wonderful thing about Club Istanbul is that, surprisingly, it is based on true events, thus adding an additional layer of authenticity to the story. In fact, the series has become a critical success in its country, as well as being one of Netflix’s most successful releases from Turkey. Created by Zeynep Günay Tan, the series features a stellar cast including Barış Arduc and Salih Bademci, known for their roles in Te alquilo mi amor.
Beyond immersing viewers in 20th century Turkey, Club Istanbul also offers a plot full of intrigue, love, revenge, and emotional reunions. The series, with its unique blend of drama and authenticity, has earned a prominent place in the hearts of Turkish series lovers and is becoming an unmissable addition to Netflix’s catalog.
