We’re talking a lot about Apple’s glasses for many reasons. First, because of how revolutionary they are in terms of technology, and second, because of their exorbitant price.
Last week, Apple unveiled its first augmented reality headset, the Apple Vision Pro, priced at $3,499. However, the company is already actively working on its successor, which means it won’t be arriving alone. By the way, we’ll explain why the current price is so high.
A cheaper and a more expensive model
According to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, who shared his insights in the latest edition of his newsletter Power On, Apple is planning to release a more affordable variant of the Apple Vision Pro glasses. Gurman speculates on various ways the company could reduce the high price point.
This could involve using lower-quality displays, a less powerful chip than the Vision Pro’s M2 (possibly a smartphone-style chip like the A15 Bionic), fewer cameras, and a simplified headband design.
Gurman argues that Apple would not compromise on the external “EyeSight” display or the eye and hand tracking systems, as they will be the hallmark of the company’s glasses.
The possibility of a cheaper variant of the Apple Vision Pro is good news for those who find the current price unacceptable, but they are still far from being released. According to Gurman, Apple plans to launch them “at the earliest by late 2025.”
It is reported that Apple is also working on a successor to the Vision Pro with an even faster processor, which is likely to be priced similarly or higher than the original.
The release date for this model is unknown, although next year’s WWDC seems like a logical time to unveil a refined version.
Gurman specifically states that the Vision Pro is actually very expensive to produce, with the $3,499 price tag being “equal to or near the manufacturing cost.” We mentioned this a few days ago as well.
