Toyota and EVgo have announced the opening of new DC fast-charging stations in Baldwin Park and Sacramento, California, aimed at underserved communities.
These charging stations are part of Toyota’s Empact plan, which seeks to make electric vehicles (EVs) more accessible in areas lacking adequate infrastructure.
Many of these locations are situated in urban environments characterized by limited off-street parking and high population density, particularly in multi-family housing units.
Charging from 10% to 80% in under ten minutes
Designed to serve bustling neighborhoods, the charging stations will be equipped with 350 kW chargers, capable of servicing up to eight vehicles simultaneously.
This surpasses the charging capacity of the current Toyota bZ4X, which peaks at less than 150 kW. While the stations offer enhanced charging capabilities, it remains to be seen how soon a wider range of EVs will be able to take full advantage of these advancements.
EVgo, which previously collaborated with General Motors to facilitate EV ownership in urban settings, appears to be capitalizing on similar strategic reasoning with this initiative. However, there is currently no clarity about whether California state funds were utilized in the development of these facilities, especially as state efforts continue to progress despite previous federal funding freezes.
Moreover, Toyota has ambitious plans for future battery technology, including solid-state batteries that could allow charging from 10% to 80% in under ten minutes. Although commercialization is anticipated for later this decade, the rollout will likely occur in lower volumes initially.
Additionally, Toyota is a key financier of the Ionna charging network—partnering with seven other automakers—to establish 30,000 charging connectors across North America by 2030, highlighting ongoing efforts to enhance EV infrastructure.
