Netflix has just revealed the trailer for the third season of The Witcher, the series that adapts the novels of Andrzej Sapkowski and that, since its launch in 2019, seeks to be the platform’s biggest bet on fantasy. Along with the trailer comes a piece of news: the next season will be released in two parts, which will premiere on June 29 and July 27.

The trailer shows the three main protagonists – Henry Cavill as Geralt, Freya Allan as Ciri and Anya Chalotra as Yennefer – searching for each other as the Wild Hunt shows up to turn their lives upside down. Undoubtedly, this is the darkest plot of the fiction, and it seems that this darkness will surround everything in the season.

In addition, the next chapters will come with new actors: Meng’er Zhang as Milva, Robbie Amell as Gallatin, Hugh Skinner as Radovid, Christelle Elwin as Mistle and Hiftu Quasem as Falka.

Why keep watching The Witcher?

However, what everyone is wondering right now is whether it makes sense to continue watching the Netflix series. It was recently announced that Henry Cavill will be leaving the fiction after the third season, and will be replaced by Liam Hemsworth from the fourth season onwards.

This has generated a lot of debate and disappointment from fans. First of all, because of the fact of the departure itself. It’s cost Cavill sweat and tears, but he’s already won over audiences and a change of lead doesn’t seem to make any sense. It’s not that he’s an unimportant supporting player; it’s that we’re talking about the most important character in the series.

On the other hand, there’s the fact of who his replacement is. Hemsworth isn’t a fan of many, and after the metaphorical beating Miley Cyrus gave him in Flowers, he’s practically a meme. If this is going to be Cavill’s replacement, it certainly looks like the series will suffer.

And finally there’s the issue of the reasons for Cavill’s departure, even more troubling than the departure itself. By all accounts, the actor is an ultra-fan of Geralt’s adventures, and has been trying to make them stick more closely to Sapkowski’s books every season to improve the quality of the series.

However, after so many artistic refusals by the team, finally the Man of Steel actor would have had enough to leave the project. With such an important series for him, it must have been something quite serious… and the quality of the project had already been faltering for some time.
