A very sad piece of news we received today, November 1st. The Day of the Dead has indeed claimed a victim: the Twitch application on Nintendo Switch. In a surprising move that caught everyone off guard, the popular streaming platform announced it in a brief statement on its website.
In this announcement, which is just a small notice, Twitch is very clear about everything. To start, November 6th will be the last day you can download the Twitch app on Nintendo Switch. So, if you want to give it a final try, you better download it within the next 90 hours, or else it will vanish.
This is the typical first step, discontinuing support, seen in many apps. However, in Twitch’s case, it goes further. The statement also mentions that January 31st, 2024, will be the last day the app will be operational for players. What does this mean? If you try to access it on February 1st, 2024, Twitch won’t work. You’ll simply have a broken tool.
Added on November 11, 2021, Twitch stated, “Nintendo continues to be a valuable partner, and we appreciate all the support from the Switch community,” but they “have made the difficult decision to remove the application.”
Nintendo, on the other hand, has not commented on the matter, indicating that it’s likely a business move by Twitch. It’s unfortunate since the app has only been available on Nintendo’s eShop for two years. If you want to try it before it disappears, now is the time.
