Nine years ago in San Francisco, the first TwitchCon was held, even before Twitch itself turned five. Since then, the ceremony has been held every year (except 2021, due to COVID-19) with different European sessions. More than 30,000 people are attending this year, and a small percentage of them might be worried upon hearing what they plan to do with hate speech (i.e., eradicate it completely).
Hate for Hate
Twitch is going to modify its ban policy, shortening or lengthening them according to their severity, not only to “reduce the risk of streamers losing their livelihood due to low-severity infractions” but also to ensure that those who repeatedly and intentionally commit offenses cannot stream again so easily. In other words, they will continue to suspend certain people, “including indefinite suspensions for very serious infractions.”
In this regard, there are some pages that use the same services that have been labeled as “the anti-Twitch.” That is, being able to stream but insulting left and right and giving hate speeches (or, as they falsely advertise it, “against woke culture and cancel culture”). It is curious that while some platforms have veered towards absolute chaos, like Twitter, others want to ignore those who consciously create a bad atmosphere. Time will tell which the general public prefers.
In addition, so that viewers are also clear about the reasons for the bans, in the email they will receive when it happens, they will have the extract of the chat where their mistake will be shown. Even later, they intend to show it in a clip to see it in real-time so that you can accept it or appeal if you think it is out of context or unfair.
Fewer bans, fairer, clearer, and facing competitors who try to shine with outdated, ultraconservative, and worn-out speeches disguised with a veneer of youth. Twitch has decided to take a clear path, and it remains to be seen if its competitors will follow with the same firmness… for better or worse.
