Twitter now allows you to request a Community Note

Twitter, the social network now known as X by Elon Musk and his followers, has once again expanded its Community Notes feature. Now, users will be able to request a note on those posts that they consider to contain questionable statements or that need context. This new option, visible in the three-dot menu of posts on the desktop version, will allow Community Notes contributors to fact-check the information.

“Users of X can request a Community Note for a post they believe could be beneficial,” Twitter states on its Community Notes page. “If there are enough requests, Community Notes contributors will receive an alert and can choose to propose a note. This way, non-contributing users of X can help and contributors know where notes can be useful.”

To request a Community Note, users must have a verified phone number associated with their profile, a requirement that also applies to Twitter Premium subscriptions. Initially, up to five requests per day per account will be allowed, although this number could increase if the requests prove to be helpful notes.

The Community Notes have been one of the main features promoted by Elon Musk since his acquisition of the platform. Originally developed as “Birdwatch” by the “pre-Musk Twitter”, several investigations have shown that this tool can be very useful for debunking misinformation and reducing the spread of fake news.

However, the excessive reliance on Twitter’s Community Notes for content moderation is quite concerning. Since Elon Musk took control of the company, he has significantly reduced its staff, eliminating 80% of its workforce, which has increased the burden on this collaborative verification function.
