2023 will go down in history as one of the best years in the history of video gaming. However, not everything that has been released has met high-quality standards, as is evident with The Lord of the Rings: Gollum. The game based on the popular character created by Tolkien has been a complete disaster, to the point that it is the worst video game of this year with a 34 out of 100 on the Metacritic website.

After its release, Daedalic, the game developer, posted a message apologizing to all players for the poor state in which Gollum had been released. The surprise came when it was revealed that this apology message was actually written by ChatGPT.

Yes, you read that right, the artificial intelligence text service was the one responsible for crafting the message. This means that the studio didn’t even bother to have such a serious, careful, and sincere message written by a person. In fact, in an interview with GameTwo, the developers confirmed that nobody at Daedalic was aware of this message or that it was going to be published on the game’s official account. It was done unilaterally by Nacon, the publisher, without informing the development team.

To conclude, the interview provided many details about the development. For instance, it was revealed that the production cost about 15 million euros in total, a relatively low figure considering the aspirations of both the publisher and the studio.

Furthermore, they pointed out that it wasn’t due to a lack of experience, as some members of the studio had been working in the industry for many years. The key issue was, rather, that there were too few hands for all the work that was needed.
