October is a wonderful month. At least, it seems that way to me. It’s a month when the cold sets in after a long summer. The days are still long, and on the 31st, we have the best costume party in the world: Halloween night.

For that reason, in this house, we don’t want to wait until the 31st to recommend spooky games to you. Horror games deserve our love and many hours in front of the PC or console. The list of the most terrifying video games for the spooky month starts today, because otherwise, time might catch up with us.

October is the perfect time to marathon some spine-chilling games. Usually, that means replaying classics like Silent Hill 2, which leaves little room to catch up with new games. That’s why today’s list is a bit more up-to-date.

Here’s a list of perfect games to play on Halloween

Resident Evil 4 Remake

If you only have time to play one horror game this month, make sure it’s Resident Evil 4. It’s not just a nostalgic remake of one of the best Resident Evil games of all time, but also a diabolical reinvention that stands on its own.

Capcom’s latest installment amplifies the action and terror of the original, making Leon S. Kennedy more lethal than ever. He’s a true action hero, dodging flying axes and kicking people’s heads. However, at its core, it remains a horror game, filled with grotesque parasites and enormous monsters that can annihilate Leon.

Even if you’ve already played it this year, now is a great time to revisit. Plus, the new Resident Evil 4 DLC, Separate Ways, is a solid extra chapter that allows players to spill more blood with Ada Wong.

Dead Space Remake

Resident Evil 4 alone would have made 2023 a great year for horror games, but it’s not the only standout remake in the genre. Dead Space also received a remake earlier this year, and it’s an experience you can’t afford to miss.

Although it’s much more than a 1:1 update of the original, the remake ups the ante with a grotesque flesh system that allows Isaac Clarke to peel his necromorph enemies like bananas. It’s frankly disgusting, and that’s precisely why you should play it this month.

The Dead Space series offers masterful space horror, making it one of the most unsettling horror series you can play. When you add in some genuinely good scares and a dose of psychological torment, you have the perfect recipe for a Halloween game.

Amnesia: The Bunker

With how packed 2023 has been, I couldn’t blame you if you missed out on Amnesia: The Bunker. The survival horror game quietly dropped earlier this year, losing some of its spotlight to bigger titles like Resident Evil 4.

And that’s a shame because Amnesia’s latest installment might just be the most terrifying of the whole saga… and that’s saying something.

Set during World War I, players find themselves trapped in a dark bunker. They must find an escape while evading the terrifying enemies that persistently lurk in the dimly lit corridors.

What’s truly spine-chilling is that the entire bunker operates on a generator that players must keep fueled at all times. When it runs out of gas, all the lights go out. It’s a perfect game for a night in, as long as you’re prepared to endure some nightmares.

Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals

You don’t have to be an action game enthusiast to experience digital thrills this month. Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals is the perfect choice for those seeking a less physically demanding gaming experience.

This supernatural narrative adventure follows Riley, who returns to her hometown to investigate mysterious radio signals. As you can imagine from its presence on this list, things get a bit spooky from there.

With choice-based dialogue and straightforward exploration, players can sit back and enjoy an atmospheric ghost story without having to fuss with controls; it’s like an interactive horror movie for young adults.
