As far as we know, Apple is preparing to release a new USB-C case for the AirPods Pro, presumably alongside the launch of the iPhone 15 lineup this fall. This change will transition from the Lightning port to the USB-C port, allowing us to charge our headphones using the same cable as the new iPhones.

New connector and several improvements in the health field

Mark Gurman informs us in the latest edition of his weekly newsletter that the change will indeed begin with the AirPods Pro and later extend to the rest of Apple’s headphones.

But this will be just one of the innovations, as in addition to the port change, Gurman highlights that Apple is testing a new feature called “Audio Test.” According to the information we have, this feature will play different tones in the ear and, based on the responses, it will be able to detect the accuracy of the listening and provide a brief diagnosis.

As Gurman comments, “the idea is to help users detect possible irregularities in their hearing, very similar to what the EDC app on the Apple Watch already does in the field of heart health.” This trend is already visible in many of the services that Apple is launching, and when combined with the other features Apple introduced for the AirPods with iOS 17 at WWDC, it makes this product even more appealing.

Gurman goes even further beyond this fall and the iPhone 15 to make long-term predictions. According to the available information, Apple is working on adding additional health sensors to the AirPods hardware, such as one for measuring body temperature through the ear canal.

While we are discussing rumors and still need to wait a bit longer for official confirmation, these developments make a lot of sense. Apple already has an audio quality test in place for AirPods to choose the correct ear tip, so expanding on that concept seems plausible. Additionally, the arrival of USB-C connectivity is something that many expect to happen sooner rather than later. If these changes do come with the new iPhone 15, we can look forward to even more exciting updates to enjoy this fall.
