Mad Max: Fury Road was a Hollywood miracle. One of those films attempted year after year, only to be ruthlessly struck down by bad luck. Fortunately, the film managed to push through, and the rest is history: one of the greatest apocalyptic movies in modern cinema. Thank you, George Miller.
And as it worked really well, the Warner Bros. offices deemed it fitting to continue the saga. However, instead of a sequel, they thought a prequel in the form of a spin-off telling Furiosa’s backstory would be better.
Today, we’ve received the trailer for this “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” and we can say that it’s already one of the most anticipated movies of 2024: packed with high-octane action, stunning cinematography, and a Chris Hemsworth who’s almost unrecognizable.
All we know about Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
The latest installment of the Mad Max saga has been long-awaited. When it arrives in May 2024, nearly nine years will have passed since Mad Max: Fury Road premiered in theaters.
That explosive post-apocalyptic action drama from 2015 starred Tom Hardy as the titular character alongside Charlize Theron, the latter portraying an older and world-weary version of Furiosa. This is the character that Anya Taylor-Joy will play in the film focused on Furiosa’s origins.
Nonetheless, a press release from Warner Bros. Pictures provides more details about Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, including the return of another iconic character from Fury Road.
“The synopsis reads, ‘As the world falls apart, young Furiosa is taken from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a large Motorbike Horde led by the Warlord Dementus. Ravaging the Wasteland, they encounter the Citadel ruled by Immortan Joe. As the two tyrants battle for dominance, Furiosa must endure many trials while gathering the means to find her way back home.’
Alyla Browne and Tom Burke are among the many supporting actors set to appear alongside Taylor-Joy and Hemsworth, although their roles have not been revealed.”
Given that Browne is a child actress, it’s likely she’ll portray a much younger version of Furiosa, suggesting that we might see some flashback sequences of her time in the Green Place of Many Mothers.
The brilliant Australian director George Miller will helm the new installment of the franchise. He has co-written the script with Nico Lathouris (Mad Max: Fury Road). Let’s hope both have pulled out all the stops to deliver another thrilling movie when it hits theaters next year.
