Although it is not yet known what motivated the murder, we do know that Momeni and Lee had known each other before. To add fuel to the fire, the police discovered that the two had a run-in the day before the murder. Before the arrest, it had been hypothesized that we were dealing with a common street crime, but new evidence points to Momeni as the alleged culprit.

How did the murder occur?

Bob Lee, also known for being the head of product at the MobileCoin cryptocurrency company, was found bleeding to death near the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge around 2:35 am on April 4. He was immediately transferred to the hospital but little could be done, since he died right there. The cause of death was determined to be injuries caused by a knife.

According to Doug Dalton, Lee’s former friend, Lee had decided to visit San Francisco for a few days to spend some time with his loved ones after the MobileCoin summit. Lee had built a reputation in the cryptocurrency world that reached across borders.

Who is Nima Momeni?

Nima Momeni, 38, is the owner of Expand IT Consulting, a place where he started working after having worked for several companies such as Marfic and Coast Range Technologie. His company has been offering IT support services to third parties since its founding in 2010.

Hours before the murder, Lee and Momeni were driving around downtown San Francisco together. Police told Mission Local that the two had been in a heated argument hours before the murder. While the motives for the argument are not known, it is a situation that police have not taken lightly.

Sam Singer, a worker who went to an office next door to Momeni’s (and who was on the building’s board of directors), explained that they met when Singer moved in. Despite Momeni’s “kindness and professionalism,” Singer described an unpleasant episode that took place in the building the night before Lee’s death.

According to Singer, a woman walked in and began shouting “Momeni’s” name, something that unsettled residents as well. As if on cue, a SWAT team showed up Thursday morning to arrest Momeni. As the saying goes, his neighbors described him as “welcoming, friendly and charming” and someone who “you would never imagine would be accused of such a heinous crime.”

While the matter is being clarified, details about how executive Bob Lee was fatally stabbed remain very scarce.
