WhatsApp will let you build your own AI chatbot: This is how it will work

WhatsApp is about to take a major step into the world of AI assistants with a feature that allows users to create their own custom chatbot. This tool will offer a guided, code-free experience within WhatsApp, making AI creation accessible to everyone, not just developers or tech-savvy users.

A new AI Studio, built into WhatsApp

Meta is preparing to roll out a new feature called AI Studio directly within WhatsApp, initially to a small group of beta testers. This addition brings the company’s AI customization tools—already available on Messenger, Instagram and the web—into its most widely used messaging app. The design is intended for users with no technical experience, offering a simplified step-by-step flow to build a chatbot from scratch.

Users will begin by assigning a role to their AI—from study coach to travel assistant or motivational buddy. Then, they choose a personality and tone, such as calm, professional, or humorous. Based on those inputs, WhatsApp will generate smart suggestions to shape the assistant’s behavior and conversational style.

Private by default, shareable if you want

Chatbots built in WhatsApp’s AI Studio will be private by default, but users can share them through a unique link, similar to the approach taken by OpenAI’s Custom GPTs and Google’s Gems. This flexibility opens the door to personalized tools for friends, communities or work teams, depending on how users want to engage with their creations.

Though the rollout has not yet started broadly, the presence of the feature in beta builds suggests that the launch may be approaching soon, following a series of high-profile updates like support for usernames and the new iPad app.
