Apple is about to release new software updates, iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1, which will mark the arrival of Apple Intelligence, the company’s artificial intelligence suite. Although not all features will be available immediately, the first tools of Apple Intelligence will arrive in just over a couple of weeks, while others will be progressively implemented in future updates.
What features will arrive with iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1
The release of iOS 18.1, rumored for next October 28th, will include some of the first Apple Intelligence features, although in beta phase. Among the most important, we find the Writing Tools, which allow us to automatically correct spelling, grammar, and style. They also offer options like “Rewrite,” which allows adjusting the tone of the text (friendly, professional, or concise), and text summaries in applications like Mail and Messages.
Another important update is the update of Siri, which comes with a new visual design featuring a glow around the edges of the screen when activated. Additionally, it improves interaction with the ability to maintain context between successive questions. The Type to Siri feature also stands out, allowing us to make requests to Siri by typing instead of speaking, with contextual suggestions to speed up responses.
Regarding the Photos app, an interesting feature is Memory Maker, which generates memories from photos and videos automatically selected based on descriptions like “Disney in 2024.” Meanwhile, the Clean Up tool allows us to remove unwanted objects from photos.
Email also receives improvements with Smart Reply, which suggests quick responses based on the context of the received messages. Additionally, Mail notifications are grouped and prioritized on the lock screen, highlighting the most important or urgent emails.
Finally, the new “Reduce Interruptions” focus mode will help us filter out irrelevant notifications, showing only the most essential ones during times when we seek to concentrate without losing connection with the world.
What features will arrive later
Some of the most anticipated features of Apple Intelligence, however, will not be available until upcoming updates. By the end of 2024, with iOS 18.2, the integration of ChatGPT into Siri is expected, allowing Siri to delegate more complex queries to OpenAI’s AI. Alongside this, we will see the launch of Image Playground, an application that will generate images from text descriptions, integrated into both Messages and Notes.
In January 2025, with iOS 18.3, Apple is expected to introduce new Siri features, although it has not yet been officially confirmed. It will be in iOS 18.4, scheduled for March, when most of the advanced Siri features will be implemented, such as the ability to interact with on-screen content and a more robust personal context, which will allow Siri to offer us more personalized and relevant responses.
While the initial features of Apple Intelligence will be available in a few weeks, the broader scope of these capabilities will be rolled out over the course of the next year. In the meantime, we are ready for the first updates. Updates that will change how we interact with our devices.
