We are quickly approaching June 10, the start date of the WWDC 2024, and with it, we are just a few weeks away from learning about the new operating systems for our devices. We have a slight idea of the support that iOS 18 will have and the support that iPadOS 18 will have, but what about the operating system of the Apple Watch? Now we have more information.
They say no, but there is still hope
According to a report from iPhonesoft.fr, it is likely that watchOS 11 will only be available for the Apple Watch Series 5 and later models. This would leave the Apple Watch Series 4, released in 2018, without support for the new update, reaching its limit at watchOS 10. In comparison, the Apple Watch Series 3 received updates up to watchOS 8, while the Apple Watch Series 2 reached watchOS 6 and the Apple Watch Series 1 could install up to watchOS 4.
The truth is that we must take the published information with some perspective. It is still early to ensure support for watchOS 11, and although some of the novelties may be exclusive to the latest watches, we can see watchOS 11 arriving on the Apple Watch Series 4.
Why? Here are two conflicting arguments. On one hand, if we follow the version progression mentioned a couple of paragraphs ago, the Series 4 should not have watchOS 11 support. On the other hand, the Apple Watch Series 4 shares design similarities and specifications with the Apple Watch SE, especially regarding the processor, which raises questions about its possible exclusion from watchOS 11.
We will have to wait a little over a couple of months to find out. It will be at the WWDC when we can confirm the compatibility of the new operating system for our Apple Watch. A system that promises quite significant changes after the long list of novelties of watchOS 10.
