After years of waiting, Ahsoka has finally premiered on Disney Plus. In Ahsoka, there has been room for everything, but above all for cameos and characters we already knew. Sabine Wren from Star Wars: Rebels quickly emerged as one of the protagonists, just like Hera Syndulla. But there’s also been space for cameos and mentions, and one of the most striking ones has been the Nightsisters of Dathomir.

These witches are mentioned in the first episode, in relation to the artifact that Ahsoka Tano obtains from an abandoned temple at the beginning of the series. Moreover, these witches had already been briefly mentioned in The Book of Boba Fett, so it seems they are or will be quite important to the future of Star Wars. But… who exactly are they and what is their role in the galaxy?

The Origin of the Nightsisters of Dathomir

In broad terms, the Nightsisters of Dathomir are inhabitants of the planet Dathomir who belong to a very specific faction: the Nightsister clan. Dathomir is the homeworld of the villain Darth Maul, but it’s much more than that. It’s a place where its inhabitants are more Force-sensitive than usual, although magic is much more common among women. In other words, Darth Maul is an exception.

The Nightsisters of Dathomir, therefore, are Force-sensitive women who can wield magical powers such as necromancy and mental illusions. Dathomir is divided into various clans and factions, and these particular women protect the planet from external threats and experiment with new abilities. They are powerful and well-known beings across the galaxy, so it wouldn’t be surprising if they appear sooner rather than later in the Star Wars visual universe.
