The announcement of The Last of Us Part II Remastered caught many of us by surprise, considering The Last of Us Part II was released in June 2020, just 3 and a half years ago. Obviously, to justify having to buy the game again or its update so soon after its release, Naughty Dog confirmed that this remastered version would bring visual improvements as well as new content.

Among the new features, The Last of Us Part II Remastered will include the “No Return” mode, a roguelike gameplay mode that generates levels by utilizing the enjoyable gameplay loop of TLOU 2 that we all know. This week, PlayStation released a new video on YouTube showing in more detail how this new mode works.

In the trailer, Naughty Dog delves into the roguelike elements and its mechanics: “Survive as long as you can in each playthrough, while choosing your path through a series of random encounters with different enemies and memorable locations from throughout Part II, all culminating in tense boss battles.”

As seen in the trailer information, “No Return” will feature unique game modifiers that “offer new and unexpected challenges as you strive to succeed (and survive) in a wide range of different encounter types.”

Although a complete list of playable characters in “No Return” hasn’t been released yet, the video shows that we’ll be able to control various familiar faces from The Last of Us 2, such as Ellie, Dina, Jesse, Tommy, Joel, Abby, Lev, Yara, Mel, and Manny. However, most of them will need progression within this game mode to unlock.

Finally, the trailer also showcases some of the new skins that can be unlocked in “No Return,” including a stylish futuristic outfit for Ellie. The Last of Us Part II Remastered will be released on January 19, 2024, for PlayStation 5.
