YouTube has launched a tagging tool that requires content creators to indicate if their videos contain synthetic or AI-generated material. The integration of this new tool is part of a plan to “strengthen transparency with viewers and build trust between creators and their audience”.

When content creators upload and publish videos on the platform, they will be required to disclose if “altered or synthetic content” is used, including audiovisual media created with generative AI, to represent something that viewers could mistake for a real person, place, or event.

However, the new policy does not require creators to identify content that is “clearly unreal, animated, includes special effects, or has used generative AI as a production aid.” In this regard, content creators will not have to disclose the use of generative AI if it has been used for production tasks such as generating scripts, ideas, or automatic subtitles, among others.

Example of a tag in a YouTube video

The new tool of the Content Creator Studio from YouTube creates tags that will appear in an expanded description on the front of the video player. For videos related to more sensitive topics such as health, news, elections, or finance, YouTube has stated that it will also place a more prominent tag on the video itself.
