YouTube is stepping up its fight against ad blockers by introducing a controversial new tactic: deliberately slowing down video playback for users who avoid ads. The platform’s decision reflects its ongoing effort to ensure that users either watch ads or subscribe to YouTube Premium, reinforcing the importance of advertising revenue for its business model.
Slower videos as a deterrent for ad blockers
Reports from users on platforms like Reddit and Brave’s community blog confirm a growing trend: videos take longer to load or play with interruptions when ad-blocking tools are detected. Some users even report seeing black screens during expected ad times, accompanied by messages like “Experiencing interruptions”—a clear sign that YouTube is actively countering ad-blocker use.
YouTube’s stance on ad blockers
The platform’s terms of service leave no room for interpretation: ad blockers are strictly prohibited without exceptions. If such tools are detected, users may see playback restrictions or warning messages asking them to whitelist YouTube or disable the blocker. These actions aim to pressure users into complying with YouTube’s monetization strategy.
Premium is the only real alternative
For those who find ads disruptive but still want a smooth viewing experience, YouTube Premium remains the only legal workaround. Beyond eliminating ads, Premium allows users to download content, play videos in the background, and access YouTube Music without interruptions. With plans starting at 13.99 €, users can also explore student and family discounts, or join sharing platforms to split the cost.
