This nicely designed image editor features the simple interface everyone loves to have in applications, but at the same time offers a surprisingly wide array of tools and options you would only expect to find in large graphic suites.

Paint.NET lets you work on several images simultaneously, has support for layers, keeps an action history that lets you undo any changes, and includes a variety of drawing tools (brushes, geometrical shapes). You'll also find several special filters and effects that can turn your image into an oil painting or a pencil drawing in just one click.

That said, don't expect Paint.NET to be some kind of free Photoshop alternative. If you use the Adobe app to work on your images, you'll surely miss many tools in Paint.NET. For everyone else though, this is a perfect tool for daily simple image editing.

Paint.NET sits somewhere between a basic editor and a complex graphic suite, featuring a nicely designed interface and a bunch of handy tools for quick photo optimization and retouching.

What's inside?

There are three main elements to Zoner Photo Studio, the Manager and the Editor. The Manager lets you find and organize the images on your PC, the Viewer lets you view them, while the editor allows you to make simple changes to your photos.

The viewer is attractive, but nothing special, but the manager is good. The interface is simple enough, with a folder tree, browser and information panel. You can email images from Zoner Photo Studio, and apply filters to make finding them easier. There isn't anything revolutionary about the Manager, but it does its job.

Image Editing

The Editor is better, offering a range of useful tools that will allow you to improve or alter photos you've taken. It's not as powerful as Photoshop, but it's much easier to use, and has the tools that most amateur or casual photographers will need. Zoner Photo Studio has a 'quick fix', which basically makes the image a bit stronger, and you can also play around with the color, levels and resize as well. There's a red eye removing tool that works well, as well as more subtle things like a clone stamp tool. In this free version, it's really only the lack of proper layer tools that are missing.

Zoner Photo Studio is a good option for basic photo retouching and editing, and has enough tools for most users.

By that, we mean people who are serious about their photos, but instead of wanting to produce graphic material for commercial ends, are looking for a program that will allow them to make stunning personal projects like greetings cards, collages and comic strips. PhotoImpact X3 is that program.

Given that it is a serious piece of software, PhotoImpact X3 needs a little bit of study before you can get the most out of it. It comes with good support material, however, including a getting started wizard, complete help files and online support, so you'll never be stuck.

Where PhotoImpact X3 falls short is in the area of appearance. It looks old-fashioned, and when we downloaded the test version, we actually initially suspected that we had downloaded an out-of-date predecessor. It turned out that we hadn't, but it gives you an idea of how clunky PhotoImpact X3 looks!

It's lucky then, that PhotoImpact X3, does well in the technical terms. It offers all the tools you'll need for getting the most out of your photos, including an ExpressFix tab where you can apply - and compare - a variety of quick-fixes. In the full edit area, you'll be able to perform more thorough fixes and edits, as well as creating images from scratch or fashioning lovely greetings cards, calendars and other artistic projects.

Speed your workflow

This app bases its approach in smoothing and slim-lining your digital photography workflow. Weren't aware you had a workflow? Well then Corel AfterShot Pro probably isn't the app for you. Try taking a look at Picasa or Photoscape instead. But if improved photos workflow sounds like what you need, then read on. Corel AfterShot Pro is a great app.

If you work with large numbers of photos that you need to process quickly and smoothly, Corel AfterShot Pro has been designed with you in mind. It's got excellent photo management and organization features, meaning that you can find the photos you want easily and quickly. The Corel AfterShot Pro interface is attractive and user-friendly, which adds to the speed with which you can process your photos.

RAW photo editing

Corel AfterShot Pro supports a lot of photo formats, including RAW, and offers complete RAW processing. Obviously, it also offers all the usual tweaks and modifications, and all of your options are handily available through the tabbed bar that runs vertically to the right. Change the view using the buttons to the top right, and navigate through your stored photos on the left.

Impressive speed

Obviously, with all the emphasis on ease of use and speed, Corel AfterShot Pro offers extremely speedy batch processing, meaning all your photos can be public-ready in a matter of seconds. It also offers a selection of output options and templates, which makes it even easier to share the final product with clients or third parties.

Corel AfterShot Pro is a great program that's definitely aimed at professional-level photographers or at least experienced individuals with a high volume of images. It doesn't offer any fancy extras, and in certain areas, such as drawing tools, that's actually a pity. What Corel AfterShot Pro lacks in nice touches, however, is more than made up for by its sheer speed and ease of batch processing and high-volume editing.

This tool lets you create an image from scratch or edit one of your images in an intuitive interface. The program is easy enough to use like any other Paint-like application, but also has some powerful features that you normally don't find in other free graphic editors.

Among the features included in RealWorld Paint you'll find support for layers and masks – just like Photoshop - and a bunch of special effects and filters, image blending, support for gradients and shadows and more, besides the basic drawing and retouching tools. RealWorld Paint may not offer the same array of options you find in professional graphic suites, but it's still a surprising selection of tools for a free editor.

With Sumo Paint Air you can create your own images or modify an existing picture and tweak it to perfection. Sumo Paint Air offers adjustments like color, saturation and hue edits and the ability to change brightness and contrast. In addition, there are a lot of fun filters to alter the appearance of your images, from different pixelate effects to textures and different varieties of blur. There aren't as many filters as other paid programs offer, but it's still a good selection for a free program.

If you're a bit more advanced, Sumo Paint Air also offers support for layers. You'll be able to blend multiple images together just as easily as you could on a professional graphics editor.

Image creation

Sumo Paint Air can accommodate your own image creation as well, and provides more than a dozen different tools to do so like a clone brush, a magic wand, a selector tool, the ability to add text and flood fill, to name a few.

Sumo Paint Air is a really useful program for graphic designers on a budget.

All of the functionality of The GIMP remains the same with the bonus of a much easier to use Photoshop style interface. One of the biggest complaints of people switching from Photoshop to The GIMP is the unintuitive GUI of it which is why the developer designed GIMPshop.

GIMPshop features menu layouts, dialogs and naming conventions that all Adobe Photoshop users will be familiar with. However, one of the main problems Windows users will experience with GIMPshop is stability. GIMPshop is an open source on-going project and so it is not a fully polished product. The GIMPshop forum isn't particularly active either so there seems little chance of getting any help on this. There are also certain features missing from GIMPshop such as recording actions that are only available in Photoshop.

Of course, GIMPshop isn't a replacement for Photoshop but it's probably the closest thing you'll ever get for free.

With this simple application you can easily apply all those little changes and effects to your pictures. Simply load any image on the program's interface and choose the desired function from a quite varied menu: resize, crop, and adjust light and color, sepia effect, black and white effect, red eye removal and a lot more. All the changes you apply are saved on the window's left pane, which lets you compare the original image to the one you obtain after applying all those effects.

In all, PhotoPad is a nice alternative tool to heavier graphic apps when it comes to do some basic editing, but it needs improvement. The program seemed a bit unstable during our tests and showed strange artifacts. Also, some of its functions are not very well implemented, like the red-eye removal tool.

PhotoPad is a simpler, lighter graphic editing tool that lets you apply basic changes and effects to your photos. On the downside, it still requires further development, especially regarding stability and usability.

Apart from than the contrast and the brightness settings, also useful is the white balance function which can make portraits a bit smoother. Other than this the only advantage of the program is its portability as it consists of just one small .EXE file. In order to be more interesting it should really have had a few more features to retouch photos, like quick ways to eliminate red-eye, change color of objects or attaching two photos to make a poster.

CEKLi PhotoLab is an interesting application for people looking to carry out very basic photo editing jobs on the move but it's lacking anything in the way of advanced features.

The program features a wide selection of editing tools (red eye removal, watermarking tool or noise reduction among others) as well as special effects and filters with which you can make your picture look totally different.
