Family Tree Builder also has excellent configuration settings, which means that with a little bit of work (and you will need to put in an effort to get the most out of the app, which is really very complete), you can get an awful lot out of this program.

Despite this huge amount of data, Family Tree Builder is really easy to use. It lets you browse the tree in several ways and also view or export it in a variety of formats. What's more, you can publish your family tree to your webpage right from the program. Family Tree Builder's only flaw, if any, is the compulsory registration in order to use it. The genealogic tree in My Family Tree begins with the first member of the family. This can be anyone, as you will be creating the rest of the tree based on the relationship with this first person: father, mother, siblings, spouse, children and so on.

Each entry in My Family Tree includes a bunch of data about the person: name, date and place of birth, genetic information (blood group, eye color and so on) and a special area to write a short biography. You can also attach photos and videos.

Besides the traditional tree view, My Family Tree offers other ways to view the information, such as a timeline and a complete series of statistics that compile the most outstanding events along the years: births, deaths, marriages, etc.

Once completed, the tree in My Family Tree can be saved, printed or exported to GEDCOM, a genealogic tree standard format. There aren’t many configuration options when printing the tree, but given that you can add media files to the tree, leaving it on the computer is probably a better option.

Family Tree Pilot displays several tabs from which you can add new families, family members and descendants. The program's simplicity makes it very easy to use, but at the same time it doesn't offer too extended capabilities. For example, you can only start a family with parents, so if you want to add your siblings you'll have to add your parents first. The information about each family member is also limited to name, birth date and death date and a small picture.

The tree tab enables you to arrange family members onto a tree graphic, simply by moving them around with the mouse. You can also resize their image by dragging its corners. However, I missed the possibility to customize the text font as well.

GRAMPS is a completely free tool however that helps you track your family tree. It allows you to store, edit, and research genealogical data and provides all of the functions you'd expect in a professional program. GRAMPS is extremely flexible allowing you to rearrange and manipulate all data events in the data base.

GRAMPS takes you through the mapping process step by step. First, it requires you to fill in the basics such as name, sex and date of birth are among the standard information. If you want to make it look more attractive, you can add photos, videos and link to external sites for more info on each individual member. GRAMPS can also create time-lines of your family's evolution and even create calendars of the most important events. An algorithm automatically builds the interconnectedness of the family tree as you enter information about people and hit the save option to compile it. One of the key elements of the program is the event display module which highlights the major moments in a person’s life and displays them in graphical form. There are a number of standard event types such as birth, marriage, house move but you can also create your own event types which can have one or more participants. For example, there are three standard participants in the event of a birth – the newborn, the father and the mother. Along with standard participants you can add to an event an unlimited number of participants with other roles such as a witness, a midwife or even a lover (such as if the baby was conceived outside of the marriage by the milkman or something).

You can also filter your family by criteria. For example, you can select all those who lived in your home town, who were born in the 30s or all those who held certain jobs. This is one of the handiest features of this programme and it’s lacking from websites such as Genes Reunited. It’s quite interesting to be able to filter your family members’ attributes to see which ones you had the most in common with or which showed the most similar characteristics.

The drawback is that obviously, since it’s not online and you are not interconnected with other users, you can only extend your family tree as far as your knowledge goes. You also have to enter each member manually which is terribly time consuming when you are talking about biographies, events in their lives and other details. These factors are already done for you by other users on website based family trees.

Nevertheless, the attractive graphics and ease of use make this an excellent choice for anyone who would rather keep their family history to themselves.
