Undoubtedly, when you start playing a video game, what you think is “Wow, I wish I could have a repetitive life for a few dollars here too.” Well, surprise, because ten lucky people are going to be able to fulfill that dream for which ‘Second Life’ paved the way years ago. In this case, it is ‘Roblox,’ which has opened its own IKEA store with real employees who will work eight hours a day in an experiment that, at the very least, we can describe as “strange” without fear of being wrong.
What do you have to do?
Watch out, because the salary is not that bad either: 13.15 pounds per hour ($16.80), which won’t make anyone rich, but we’ve been in worse situations. The concept itself (a digital world of fun where you can sell both real and digital things) is deeply depressing, but in favor of IKEA it must be said that other big retailers like Walmart have also joined.
Work has its good things, of course: it’s completely remote (that goes without saying) and you don’t need previous experience because it’s a completely new position. However, it is a limited contract. So limited, that we will know when it starts, but if it fails they will probably just close shop in ‘Roblox’ without giving further explanations to the press, among other things because it is not affiliated with the game itself and it is an independent advancement. They communicate successes, but never failures. Marketing 101.
And what will the people who work there do? Well, they will advise customers in different sections. For now, in the initial test, they ask questions like “What would you do if Ikea ran out of pixelated hot dogs?” or “How do you feel about the idea of becoming pixels?” If your only question is “Have we really reached that terrible stage of the tackiest capitalism?” the answer is “Yes, of course we have.”
