Just take a look at the movie and series release calendar to realize that 2024 is a year full of great science fiction bets. On one hand, there’s Dune: Part 2, which has just arrived in theaters with incredible numbers. We also have The Three-Body Problem, the biggest Netflix series coming this year. And from Adam Sandler playing an astronaut to the second part of Code 8, there are constantly new releases related to the genre.

However, there is a premiere that will arrive in 2024 that can overshadow everything else in science fiction. It’s Megalopolis, a highly anticipated film directed by none other than Francis Ford Coppola, the filmmaker behind The Godfather and Apocalypse Now. Coppola had not directed anything since 2012, let alone a big blockbuster like his colleagues Steven Spielberg or Martin Scorsese. However, he has chosen 2024 to release what could be his last film, at the age of 84.

A movie that seemed cursed

Megalopolis tells the story of an architect who wants to rebuild the city of New York as a utopia after a devastating disaster. We don’t know much more about the film, but the truth is that it is one of the director’s long-standing projects. Francis Ford Coppola wrote the script in the early 1980s, but the film always took a backseat to his other projects. However, as explained by Variety, when he was ready to direct it in 2001, the September 11 attacks happened and the production was canceled for obvious reasons.

Since then, directing Megalopolis has always been a dream for the filmmaker, and finally he will achieve it in a big way: with a budget of 120 million dollars and the possibility of premiering during the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. The protagonists will be Adam Driver and Audrey Plaza, two of the hottest actors of the moment, so it’s clear that it has everything to succeed at the box office.
