Do you remember Episode I, when it seemed like the new important characters really mattered in the saga? Well, that hasn’t been the case for everyone, certainly. In an unexpected twist of the Star Wars universe, the beloved (well, so to speak) character Watto has been killed by Darth Vader in a new comic, Star Wars: Legacy of Vader #2. No one will miss him too much.
A couple of pages ago, in a galaxy very, very close…
This comic reveals that Vader returned to Tatooine, where Watto had owned Anakin Skywalker and his mother, Shmi, as slaves. Watto, a Toydarian, was immune to Jedi mind tricks and owned a second-hand goods shop, made his last appearance in Attack of the Clones. This death has sparked a strong reaction on social media, where fans have shared condolences and tributes through social networks.
In the comic, it is shown that Darth Vader seeks revenge against Watto, something logical considering their complicated relationship. In The Phantom Menace, Anakin won his freedom in a pod race after a deal between Qui-Gon Jinn and Watto. Since then, the character has remained in the memory of fans, despite his limited screen time. The devastation over his death has been palpable, as demonstrated by several tweets remembering Watto as a small businessman on Tatooine, leaving a significant void in popular culture.
While social media mourns the loss of this character, the Star Wars franchise continues with new projects. It has been confirmed that The Mandalorian & Grogu will premiere on May 22, 2026, featuring Jeremy Allen White and possibly Sigourney Weaver. Additionally, it is expected that this new installment, among other upcoming Star Wars content, will continue to expand the rich universe created by George Lucas.
