A New Electric Vehicle Startup Aims for Sustainability and Efficiency

A new player in the electric vehicle (EV) market is setting its sights on sustainability and efficiency.

Also, a startup spun off by Rivian, aims to provide a viable alternative to the growing trend of large, heavy vehicles dominating the automotive landscape.

With a significant $105 million investment secured from the venture capital fund Eclipse Ventures, Also is poised to launch its flagship product in 2026, focusing initially on the U.S. and European markets.

80% of car trips are 15 miles or shorter

Rivian maintains a minority stake in Also and sees potential for collaborative efforts, including the possibility of leveraging some of its retail presence. The new company claims to challenge the prevalent “segment creep” in the automotive industry—a phenomenon where vehicles are consistently designed larger than their predecessors, leading to increased emissions and inefficiencies.

Road transportation is a leading cause of global CO2 emissions, contributing significantly to climate change. With data indicating that 80% of car trips are 15 miles or shorter, Also asserts its mission to inspire consumers to opt for smaller, more eco-friendly alternatives.

By creating a vertically integrated technology platform that develops its motors, batteries, electronics, and software in-house, Also promises a user experience that is “unlike anything seen in these segments before.”

Additionally, Rivian is shifting its focus towards smaller vehicles, including the anticipated R2 electric SUV set to debut in 2026, along with the R3 and R3X hatchback models. This strategic pivot underscores the growing need for more affordable and efficient transportation solutions that address both consumer needs and environmental responsibilities.

As the automotive industry grapples with the challenges of sustainability and consumer preferences, Also’s innovative approach to micromobility might just pave the way for a new era in electric vehicle design and usage.
