Video editing is a process that requires time and dedication. Everyone who engages in it, whether professionally or as an amateur, knows this. Fortunately, Premiere Pro has a quite innovative feature: Generative Extend, powered by the artificial intelligence of Adobe Firefly.
With this tool, editors can easily add frames or audio to extend a clip. Its uses can be very varied: smoothing a transition, maintaining ambient sound continuity, etc. If you stay with us, you will discover what Generative Extend is and how you can use it step by step, without complications.
What is Generative Extend?
Powered by Adobe Firefly, Generative Extend is a feature integrated into Adobe Premiere Pro that allows us to add extra frames to any video clip. Specifically, it can extend up to 2 seconds of video or up to 10 seconds of audio (or 2 seconds combined) at the beginning or end of a clip.
It is a tool that can help us improve transitions, fill in ambient sounds, and much more. As they say, the sky is the limit.

This is how you can use Generative Extend
Before we dive into using it, we first need to ensure that our material is suitable for using Generative Extend. The videos must have a minimum resolution of 360p and a maximum of 4K Cinema. As for bit depth, the frames are always generated in 8 bits, regardless of the source.
Once you have ensured, we can get started. One of the great advantages of Generative Extend is how easy it is to put it into practice. As you will see, you won’t have to follow complicated steps:
- Make sure that the video clip you want to extend is at least 2 seconds, and the audio at least 3 seconds.
- Select the Generative Extend tool. You will find it in the toolbar.
- Drag the edge of the clip (either the start or the end) on the timeline to extend it.
- Premiere Pro will automatically generate the added frames or audio. These will be clearly labeled as AI-generated.
- If you don’t like the result, right-click on the generated label and choose Regenerate to get another variant. You can also select Revert to Original to go back to the original clip.
However, Generative Extend also has limitations. There are certain types of clips that do not work well, such as those that have too much grain and noise. As for audio, Generative Extend is not capable of generating dialogue. You can only extend ambient sound, sound effects, and any type of background noise.
When using Adobe Firefly technology to create frames, we may also encounter issues depending on your region. For example, users located in Russia, Belarus, and China cannot use Generative Extend.
Questions about Generative Extend
Generative Extend is an incredibly useful feature for anyone who has to work daily with Premiere Pro. However, it is normal to have questions when using it. Some of the most common ones are as follows:
What happens when Generative Extend is used?
The Premiere Pro feature uses a small segment of between 1.5 and 3 seconds of the clip to be extended and then sends it to the cloud to be processed by its AI model. After that, the frames are generated based on this.
Does Adobe use my videos to train its AI model?
Breathe easy: Adobe does not use your videos to train its AI model. In the case of Generative Extend, Adobe only analyzes the clip you want to extend to generate the frames; it does not use it to improve the AI.
Does Generative Extend work with texts?
You have to keep in mind that Generative Extend is primarily designed for traditional recordings. Technically, it can be used on clips with graphics or effects, but the results will be somewhat curious and different.
Is Generative Extend free?
Generative Extend is a premium feature within Premiere Pro. For a limited time, you can try it for free and discover how it transforms your workflow. After that, you will only need to use your generative credits, included in certain Creative Cloud plans or available with Adobe Firefly.
The Creative Cloud subscription includes various AI features within Premiere Pro, such as automatic subtitle translation and voice-to-text transcription.
