AirPods or dirty earbuds? Here’s how to clean them

Wireless earbuds and headphones are an essential part of daily life, but failing to clean them regularly can lead to serious problems. Dirt, earwax, and bacteria accumulate over time, affecting both audio quality and hygiene. Worse, unclean earbuds can introduce bacteria into your ear canal, increasing the risk of infection. To keep your devices in top condition, here’s how to clean them properly.

The right way to clean your AirPods

Apple recommends using a disinfecting or alcohol wipe to clean the exterior surface of your AirPods. However, you should avoid using it on the mesh speaker. Instead, use a dry cotton swab and a soft-bristled brush to gently remove dirt without pushing debris further inside. For stubborn earwax, pressing a piece of Fun-Tak against the speaker mesh can help pull out residue.

Earbuds like the AirPods Pro come with removable silicone tips that make cleaning easier. Simply detach the tips and soak them in warm, soapy water for about 30 minutes. For tougher stains, agitate the water slightly to loosen debris. After washing, wipe them down with a soft cloth and let them air dry completely before reattaching.

Cleaning over-ear headphones

Over-ear headphones require extra care. Never submerge them in water or use abrasive tools, as this can damage sensitive components. Instead, wipe down the headband with a disinfecting wipe and soak the ear cushions in a mild detergent solution. After cleaning, dry them thoroughly before reattaching.

Don’t forget the charging case

A dirty charging case can transfer bacteria back to your earbuds. Use a dry, lint-free cloth to wipe away visible dirt, and if necessary, dampen it slightly with water or rubbing alcohol. Be careful to avoid getting liquid inside the charging ports.
