Apex Legends, the popular battle royale from Respawn Entertainment, is going through a difficult period, reflected in the alarming loss of 34% of its active player base in the last two months. The community is increasingly dissatisfied, citing questionable decisions and lack of content as the main reasons for their departure. This situation has led EA to acknowledge that the game’s trajectory has not been as expected in recent years.
A game that is struggling to regain its footing after a tremendous stumble
During a recent meeting with shareholders, Andrew Wilson, the company’s CEO, admitted that the team is working on a significant overhaul for Apex Legends, although these efforts are being sidelined by the development of a new Battlefield title, scheduled to be released before April 2026. This timeline indicates that any substantial update for Apex Legends could take about a year to arrive.
Despite the current situation, Wilson has mentioned that the goal is to rejuvenate the gaming experience and restore hope to the community, suggesting that this could include a major update, or even the possibility of an Apex 2.0. However, it is worth remembering that last October, Wilson had stated that a launch of Apex Legends 2 was not in the company’s plans, suggesting that EA prefers to evolve the game within its current structure rather than launching a numbered sequel.
Apex Legends currently ranks number 12 among the most played titles on Steam, highlighting serious player retention issues. With most of the development teams focused on Battlefield, concern is growing among the game’s followers, who are hoping for a solution that ensures the longevity and revitalization of the franchise.
