The arrival of portable devices dedicated to video games like the Steam Deck and the ASUS ROG Ally has transformed the way players experience their favorite titles. Combining the power of a PC with the portability of a console, these devices have sparked a growing interest in the market. However, the operating system they use has become a fundamental aspect of their performance and versatility.
Using SteamOS is not among Asus’s plans
Currently, the most prominent options include SteamOS, based on Linux, and Windows 10-11, with Windows being the most popular choice due to its extensive library of games. ASUS, in particular, has made clear its commitment to Microsoft’s operating system, arguing that it is the “global standard for gaming”. According to the company, keeping the platform open to the needs of all gamers is one of its priorities, which is reflected in its choice of Windows as the default operating system for its ROG Ally devices.
Despite the fact that the Steam Deck has gained notoriety and has established itself as a viable option for players who prefer SteamOS, ASUS has taken a clear stance. Although the company does not rule out the possibility of users installing SteamOS on their devices, it has emphasized that no native or factory models with this operating system will be launched in the near future.
The recent news of the Lenovo Legion Go launch with SteamOS has sparked speculation about whether ASUS might take a similar path. However, ASUS’s response indicates that, for now, they will remain focused on Windows, as it allows them to offer a greater variety in their game library. With the portable gaming landscape constantly evolving, players will continue to keep an eye on how these dynamics develop in the near future.
