At the end of last year, Steam released The Best of 2023, which showcases the platform’s games that had the best economic performance in 2023. Now, a couple of weeks into the new year, Video Game Insights 2024 Global PC Games Market Report has been published, revealing the exact sales figures of these games on the Valve store.
After repeatedly collecting the sales success of many of the listed games, it is not surprising that RPGs completely dominated Steam last year, with several of the top 10 games belonging to this genre.
The top 10 is led by 3 games that have generated a lot of buzz in 2023: Baldur’s Gate 3 ($657 million), Hogwarts Legacy ($341 million), and Starfield ($235 million). Following them are Resident Evil 4 Remake ($159 million), Sons of the Forest ($116 million), Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon ($87 million), FC24 ($81 million), Star Wars: Jedi Survivor ($68 million), Lethal Company ($52 million), and Cities Skylines 2 ($50 million).
Baldur’s Gate 3, the latest work by Larian Studios, has undoubtedly been the big surprise of 2023, raising almost ten times more than Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. But that’s not all: the Dungeons & Dragons-based role-playing game has managed to achieve more sales than Hogwarts Legacy and Starfield combined. Considering the popularity of the game based on the magical world of Harry Potter and the latest installment by Bethesda (the creators of Skyrim), the feat is nothing short of epic.
The Best of 2023 page on Steam also highlights other games with good results from last year, but it does not reveal the figures that support them. The only thing known is that Cyberpunk 2077 sold more than Elden Ring, that both surpassed Star Wars: Jedi Survivor in sales, and that these three sold more than other popular games, such as Lies of P, The Last of Us: Part 1, and the eternal Stardew Valley.
