One month before its anniversary, Hogwarts Legacy has made it clear that a video game based on the world of Harry Potter sells on its own. David Haddad, the president of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, has confirmed in a recent interview with Variety that the title by Avalanche Software sold no less than 22 million copies in 2023.
The figures are completely exceptional, even coming from such a famous and popular IP like Harry Potter. Warner Bros. Games adds that only during this holiday season, close to 2 million units have been sold.
In the interview, Hadded described Hogwarts Legacy as “the best-selling game of the year in the entire industry worldwide”: “it’s a position that is usually occupied by the sequel of one of these games and we are very proud to have been able to break into the top ranks”.
Warner Bros. added that Hogwarts Legacy has generated 707 million hours of gameplay, highlighting that many players decided to start new games playing in different Houses. In addition, aspiring wizards have created 819 million potions, harvested 1.3 billion plants, saved 593 million magical beasts, and defeated 5 billion enemies.
With such overwhelming success, it wouldn’t be far-fetched to suspect that Avalanche Software is already working on a sequel and more titles set in the magical world of Harry Potter, something that Hadded himself would have hinted at, teasing future projects.
Among these, there would be Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions, a title announced in April of last year in which we will be able to play quidditch matches (the forgotten sport of Hogwarts Legacy), as well as “a series of other things” set in that universe.
However, the Warner Bros. executive has not clarified whether we will see a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy or when the highly anticipated quidditch game will be released: “We have no concrete announcement on how and when exactly it will be released (Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions), but we are working to design it in a way that will delight fans,” said Haddad.
