The Spanish streaming platform Atresplayer has just premiered the series Santuario, a science fiction thriller based on the audio series by Manuel Bartual and Carmen Pacheco that has captivated audiences since its release. With a unique proposal of a dystopia where women must be assisted to gestate naturally, it offers an interesting and unsettling reflection on what the future holds for humanity.

The series has premiered with great reviews, and although it seems like a topic we have already seen in some other fictions like The Handmaid’s Tale, Sanctuary offers reflections that go beyond, touching on topics ranging from artificial intelligence to the climate crisis, including social class differences.

A Science Fiction Thriller Full of Reflections

Starring Aura Garrido (The Ministry of Time, The Innocent) and Lucía Guerrero (Demons, Sorry If I Call You Love), the series reunites the actresses who brought to life the successful podcast on which it is based. The original creators have also returned as writers, ensuring the narrative and thematic continuity of the project.

In the fiction, the protagonists are taken to the Sanctuary, a place designed to ensure safe and uncomplicated pregnancies for both mothers and babies. However, one of the pregnant girls soon discovers that nothing in her environment is what it seems and tries to get out of there as best she can.

The series has garnered very good reviews and it is expected that, beyond staying on Atresplayer, it will soon be available on free-to-air television in Spain. It is also more than likely that it will end up being sold to international streaming platforms, where it can make an impact worldwide.
