When a film like Avatar 2 is released, which has been waiting for so long on the big screen and has a massive budget, it is normal for all productions that come out around it to go unnoticed. Nevertheless, what many of us did not expect was for M3GAN to be able to compete with James Cameron’s film.

The Blumhouse production has managed to raise 30.2 million dollars in its premiere this first weekend. The figure is exclusive to the American market, so if we add the international amount, the total amount goes up to 45.6 million dollars. Not bad, right?

To give us an idea, Avatar: The Way of Water has made 45 million dollars this past weekend only in the United States, that is, the only one that comes close is M3GAN. However, globally and in total revenue, the figure is astronomical: Avatar 2 has made 1.713 billion dollars.

Now, what is happening for M3GAN to have entered into the second place in such a strong way? How is it possible that with a budget of 12 million dollars it has already obtained a revenue that multiplies by four? Internet is to blame.

The M3GAN meme

Beyond the fact that the quality of the film is good and it is pleasing among the spectators, a large part of the success of M3GAN lies in how the internet can lift everything it proposes by embracing the meme.

Since the film’s promotion campaign started a month ago, M3GAN has been on everyone’s lips, either because of the problem of AI or because users make memes about it. The other day, for example, at a Los Angeles Chargers game, the dancers were dressed as M3GAN, and the official account put: “Halftime show with my friends.” And the video is not to be missed.

The same with a countless number of actresses dressed in their look, asking for a coffee.

The official M3GAN account is the first to grab the meme, and from here only good things can come out. When the profile itself bets on it, the community reacts. Also, everything emerges organically.

The meme as a form of communication, with a tape that is horror but at the same time generates laughter. And in that disparate duality, a marketing and communication campaign is taken advantage of that has already proven to be very profitable, as seen on the first weekend. How far will M3GAN go?
