California has reached a significant milestone in its electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure, boasting a total of 178,549 public and shared private chargers—48% more than the number of traditional gas nozzles across the state.
Governor Gavin Newsom celebrated this achievement, highlighting that California is actively expanding its EV charging network contrary to federal efforts that may hinder electric vehicle adoption.
“We’re embracing our clean car future and providing consumers more choices,” Newsom stated, reiterating the state’s commitment to sustainable transportation options.
An estimated 700,000 Level 2 chargers installed in single-family homes
The California Energy Commission (CEC) reports that the state is home to approximately 120,000 gas nozzles, while the number of EV chargers continues to grow. Notably, the current figure includes over 162,000 Level 2 chargers and nearly 17,000 DC fast chargers.
This tally excludes an estimated 700,000 Level 2 chargers installed in single-family homes, demonstrating the potential for further EV adoption. Recent enhancements in data tracking contributed to a clearer picture of California’s charging landscape, revealing that almost 38,000 of the chargers were newly installed in 2024, while an additional 35,554 were recently identified as operational.
This push for robust charging infrastructure is backed by significant financial commitments, including a recently approved $1.4 billion investment plan aimed at expanding zero-emission transportation facilities.
This plan encompasses initiatives such as the Fast Charge California Project, which has allocated $55 million for the installation of DC fast chargers at businesses and publicly accessible sites. With CALeVIP, the nation’s largest EV charging incentive program, California is reinforcing its position as a leader in clean energy efforts.
As California continues to drive toward a greener future, consumers may find that now is a pivotal time to consider electric vehicles, not only for environmental benefits but also for the convenience provided by an ever-expanding network of charging options.
